ARTIST STATEMENT

Alchemist Angel is multi-disiplinary artist with a primary interest in exploring erotica, rave culture, fantasy, fashion, alternative  subcultures, fetish, and interesting people. While I love editorial photography that requires more creative direction, I would also consider myself a documentary photographer. For instance, my room series is a collection of portraits focusing on people that exist in my community/social media orbit. I get to capture them in their element and with the spaces they have built for themselves. I think photography plays a huge role in archiving
PHOTOGRAPHY

Growing up with two environmentalists parents and my father who is a landscape photographer, I was enamored with photography from a young age. Even with being surrounded by amazing art books and prints we had hanging up, I was always obsessed with our plentiful family albums. I would sit on the floor for hours and try to connect my memories with the photos I was seeing. I loved how they had sun spots, sometimes out of focus or off frame, and were largely imperfect. My initial exploration into photography work was primarily landscape with second-hand point and shoots. I like to maintain a small set up and allow my photos to feel more like a practice of documentation.

As I have developed my practice, I now primarily shoot portraits which I used to despise doing because it takes a certain level of communication and confidence that I used to lack. I do think having my fundamentals in landscape photography informs my  portraits. To me, portraiture is about world building and creating a scene in which the model exists. I typically detest basic studio set ups and want the environment to feel lived in and actively add to the model’s perspective. I use fashion, set design, modeling pairs, and different lighting techniques to build these emotional + physical worlds.
PRINT

Print is a medium that brings all my art practices into the physical landscape. It’s an easily accessible medium with endless possibilities in action. Besides my personal obssesion with art zines and books, there is power in archiving your work in physical form, especially in the digital age. I work in the print industry and have hands on experience with both production and print consultations.
